Romiley railway station is a great starting point for several interesting and scenic walk.
Chadkirk Chapel and Country Park is just down the hill from Romiley centre. A walk of around ten minutes down the intriguingly named Burymewick (Bury me Alive) Hill leads you to the historic chapel, which opens each weekend and bank holiday and sells tea, coffee and snacks.
There are various events each year which are listed on the Friends of Chadkirk website. The largest event is the annual festival and well dressing at the end of July.
A modern footbridge and well surfaced, wide footpath links Chadkirk with Marple and it’s easy to walk up the other side of the valley to Rose Hill station to catch a return train.
If canals are your thing, Romiley station is close to the Peak Forest canal, which is part of the 97 mile Cheshire Ring. The walk towards Manchester is full of industrial heritage, while stepping out in the other direction towards Macclesfield or Whaley Bridge takes you through some beautiful rural scenery.
If you fancy a shorter walk, however, the towpath from, Romiley to Marple takes you through tranquil woodland, then over the breathtaking Marple Aqueduct, where the canal flies 100 feet over the river Goyt. A beautiful flight of locks leads you to Marple, where you can catch a return train.
If you prefer a hill walk, just turn left out of Romiley station car park and head up Werneth Low, where your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views across Manchester and the Cheshire Plain to the Welsh hills.
Broadbottom station, on the Glossop line, is a good afternoon walk away at the other end of the low.
